How to Set Up and Use Quizzes in a SureDash Course Space

Quizzes let you test your learners’ understanding right inside a course, sitting alongside lessons in the same structure. You can run them as simple practice exercises or as graded pass/fail checkpoints that control whether a learner can move forward.

Applies to: This feature was introduced in SureDash Base v1.9.3 and SureDash Pro v1.9.0.

Before You Begin

  • The quiz builder (creating and authoring quizzes) is available in the SureDash Core plugin.
  • The quiz runtime (taking quizzes, grading, results, progress tracking, and emails) requires the SureDash Pro.
  • You need an existing Course Space to add a quiz to.

Understanding Quiz Modes

Before creating a quiz, decide which mode suits your course:

  • Practice mode — No grades. The learner submits their answers and gets a friendly acknowledgement. This is the default.
  • Pass/Fail mode — The learner is scored against a passing percentage you set. You can also block the next lesson until they pass.

Part 1: Creating a Quiz (Course Creators)

Adding a Quiz to a Course

  1. Open your Course Space from the SureDash dashboard.
  2. Go to the Course space.
  3. Click the + Add > Quiz button inside a section, just like you would add a lesson.
  4. The quiz appears in the course tree with a blue Quiz badge, section numbering (e.g., 1.2), and a status dropdown showing Draft by default.

Note: Quizzes can be freely reordered with lessons using drag-and-drop. Quizzes do not support comments.

Configuring Quiz Settings

  1. Click Edit Settings on the quiz row in the course tree.
  2. The Quiz Settings dialog opens. Fill in the details below.
Quiz Setting Dialog box

Quiz Title: Enter the name of the quiz. This field is required before you can save.

Quiz Slug: This is the URL slug for the quiz page. It is auto-generated from the title if you leave it blank.

Status: Set to Published when the quiz is ready for learners. The default is Draft.

Has passing grade

  • Off (default) — Practice mode. No grading.
  • On — Pass/Fail mode. This reveals two more settings below.

Pass mark (%) Only visible when Has passing grade is on. Set the percentage a learner needs to score to pass (0 to 100). Default is 50.

Restrict next lesson until passed Only visible when Has passing grade is on. When turned on, the learner must pass this quiz before they can move to the next item in the course. Default is Off.

Hide answers on result page: When turned on, learners see their score but not which options were correct or wrong. Default is Off.

  1. Click Save Settings when done.

Adding Questions

  1. Open the quiz in edit mode.
  2. Click Add Question to create a new question.
  3. Choose the question type:
    • Single Choice — the learner picks exactly one correct answer.
    • Multiple Choice — the learner picks one or more correct answers.

Add questions to SureDash Course Quiz

  1. Enter the question text. This is required.
  2. (Optional) Add a hint or help text. This appears under the answer options to give learners a nudge.
  3. (Optional) Upload a question image. If you add an image, alt text is required.
  4. Add your answer options. Each question needs at least two options, and every option must have text.
  5. Check the Mark correct box next to the right answer(s).
    • For Single Choice, selecting a new correct option automatically clears the previous one.
    • For Multiple Choice, you can mark more than one option as correct.
  6. Repeat for as many questions as you need.
  7. Drag questions to reorder them. The numbering updates automatically.
  8. Click Save Settings when done.

Note: The quiz will not save if any question is missing text, has fewer than two options, has any option without text, or has no correct option marked.

Part 2: The Learner Experience (Pro Addon Required)

Taking a Quiz

  • Quizzes open as a full dedicated page, similar to a lesson page.
  • Learners must be logged in. If not, they will see a “Please log in to take this quiz” message.
  • A sticky header shows the quiz title, an N of M answered counter, and a progress bar that fills as questions are answered.
  • A Reset button clears all selections if the learner wants to start fresh.
  • Single-choice questions show radio buttons. Multiple-choice questions show checkboxes with a “Select one or more” label.
  • The Submit button stays disabled until every question has at least one answer.

How Grading Works

  • Every question carries equal weight (1 point each).
  • A question is only marked correct when the learner’s selected options exactly match the correct set. There is no partial credit.
  • Score = number of fully correct questions.
  • Percentage = score divided by total questions, multiplied by 100, rounded to the nearest whole number.
  • In Pass/Fail mode, the learner passes when their percentage is equal to or higher than the pass mark you set.

Viewing Results

After submitting, the learner sees an instant result banner showing:

  • Their percentage score
  • “Correct: N / M”
  • How many attempts they have made

The banner changes based on the result:

  • Passed (green banner with a “Passed” badge)
  • Near miss (orange banner)
  • Low score (orange banner with an encouraging message)
  • Practice mode (neutral “thanks for submitting” message)

If Hide answers on result page is turned off, correct answers are highlighted in green and wrong picks in red. Options the learner did not select are never revealed, so the full answer key stays protected.

Retaking a Quiz

  • A Retake quiz button appears on the result screen. Clicking it re-opens the quiz without a page reload.
  • Retakes are unlimited.
  • Only the latest attempt is stored and shown.
  • If the learner reloads the page after submitting, their previous answers and result are restored in a read-only state.

Part 3: Course Progress and Quizzes

Quizzes count toward a learner’s course completion percentage, just like lessons do.

Progress = (completed lessons + completed quizzes) divided by (total lessons + total quizzes)

A quiz is marked complete based on its settings:

SettingWhen it counts as complete
Practice mode (no grading)On any submission
Pass/Fail, without “Restrict next lesson”On any submission
Pass/Fail, with “Restrict next lesson until passed”Only when the learner passes

Part 4: Lesson Order Enforcement (Course-Level Setting)

Lesson order enforcement is a course-level setting that makes the entire course sequential. Learners must complete each item in order before the next one unlocks.

Note: This is different from the per-quiz Restrict next lesson until passed setting. Order enforcement applies to the whole course and covers both lessons and quizzes.

Turning on Lesson Order Enforcement

  1. Go to your Course Space settings.
  2. Find the Course Settings sidebar.
  3. Toggle on Lesson order enforcement.

Enabled the Lesson Order enforcement

What Learners See

  • When Off (default): Learners can open any lesson or quiz in any order.
  • When On: Each item is locked until every published item before it in the course is complete.
    • The first item in the course is always unlocked.
    • Locked items appear dimmed and non-clickable in the course sidebar, with a lock indicator.
    • If a learner tries to reach a locked item directly by URL, they see a “Lesson locked” screen with the message: “Unlock this lesson by completing all previous lessons.”
SureDash Course Lesson items are locked

The Quiz Button States (with Order Enforcement)

StateButton label
Locked, no attempt yet (pass required)Disabled — “Pass this quiz to continue to the next lesson”
Locked, no attempt yet (no pass required)Disabled — “Submit this quiz to continue to the next lesson”
Learner has met the requirementComplete Quiz — clicking marks it complete and moves forward
Already completeContinue — plain navigation

Note: Admins and portal managers bypass order enforcement and can preview any lesson or quiz in any order. The enforcement is also checked on the server, not just in the browser, so it cannot be bypassed by navigating directly to a URL.

What Is Not Supported (Yet)

To set the right expectations with learners, here is what the quiz feature does not currently include:

  • No quiz timer or time limit
  • No per-question point weighting (every question is worth 1 point)
  • No attempt limit (retakes are unlimited)
  • No question or answer shuffle/randomization
  • No question bank or reuse across quizzes
  • No import or export of questions
  • No per-answer explanations (only one hint text per question is supported)

Email Notifications

No email is sent when a learner submits or passes a specific quiz. A course completion email is sent once when the learner reaches 100% completion across all lessons and quizzes. This email includes the course title, description, and certificate URL (if configured).

With quizzes set up, you can create more engaging and structured learning experiences inside your SureDash Course Space. Whether you want a simple knowledge check or a strict gated progression, the quiz feature gives you full control over how learners move through your course.
