Targeted Discussions in SureDash

Targeted Discussions let you control who can see a discussion post at the time of creation. Instead of making every post visible to all members in a space, you can limit visibility to specific users or to members of a SureMembers access group.

This is useful when you need to share something with a subset of your community — such as an internal team update, a premium-only announcement, or a private group conversation — all within your existing discussion spaces, without needing to create separate spaces or workarounds.

Purpose and Use Cases

The Private Discussion feature is useful in situations where visibility needs to be controlled, such as:

  • Sharing announcements meant only for specific members
  • Enabling private conversations within discussion spaces
  • Restricting discussion visibility to SureMembers access groups
  • Running internal team discussions
  • Creating premium-only or members-only conversations

How It Works

When creating a discussion post, you can mark it as Private. Once enabled, you choose one of two ways to restrict visibility:

  • Individual Users
Select specific portal members who should be able to view the discussion. Only the users you pick will see the post — everyone else in the space will not.
  • Access Groups (SureMembers)
Limit visibility to members who belong to a selected SureMembers access group. This is the faster option when you want to target an entire group rather than naming people individually.
If SureMembers is not installed, the Access Groups option will not appear. You can still use the Individual Users option without SureMembers.

How to Create a Targeted Discussion

Follow these steps to create a discussion post that is visible only to specific people:

  1. Open a Discussion Space in the portal.
  2. Create a new discussion post.
  3. Select the target users or access groups.
  4. Publish the discussion.

After publishing, the discussion will only be visible to the selected users or group members. Other portal members will not see the post.

To update visibility on an existing post, open the post, click the three-dot menu, and select Post Settings. You can change the privacy setting and target audience from there.

You Are All Set

Targeted Discussions give you a clean way to manage who participates in specific conversations without restructuring your portal. Use them whenever a post needs a smaller, more specific audience than the full space membership.
